Palmera House

Pacific Palisades, CA

4500 sf new construction

The plan for the Palmera Oaks House is conceived as a collection of separate volumes associated with the primary programmatic spaces of the home. This strategy allows the architecture to respond to the natural terrain while creating a layered sequence of interior and exterior spaces connected by a continuous living level.

A defining feature of the design is a ribbon of glazing that threads through the house beneath the canopy of the surrounding oak trees. This glazed band visually links the living spaces while extending outward to capture expansive views of the landscape and distant hills.

From the street, the house presents a restrained and largely opaque façade, punctuated by clerestory windows that introduce soft natural light while maintaining privacy. In contrast, the rear of the residence opens almost entirely to the landscape, creating uninterrupted views of the property and the surrounding California oaks.

After nearly three years of planning and design and eighteen months of construction, the residence was nearing completion when it was destroyed in the Palisades fire. Although the home was never fully realized, the project represents a careful response to site, landscape, and the experience of living within the coastal hillside environment of Pacific Palisades.
